Artist's Statement
As a child convinced that science was my future, I believed I could create a laser by combining flashlights with the brightly colored, transparent pieces of plastic that decorated the world of the 1970s. I never made the laser work, but the inventing process provided me with a lifelong interest in the magical properties of light and color.
My work focuses on optical mixing and the impact of color on mood. The past explorations of color field artists, light and space artists, stained glass artisans and projection technologists are the basis upon which I begin my explorations. I use mixed media, combining paint, polymer films, constructed frames, canvas, plexiglass, digital imagery and lights. I use these tools to explore novel ways of modeling the impact of real world optical properties on the human figure and both natural and machined surfaces.
Watching people physically react to color and light endlessly fascinates me. I create objects that elicit this limbic reaction and that can be incorporated into a personal environment. I think of my work as a tool to provide both a central organizing experience for and a sense of control over inhabited spaces.
